feedback for "Back vs. Tummy"
-
We struggled with back vs tummy when we brought our DD home from the birth center. We tried to put her down on her back like all the books said. SHE WOULD NOT SLEEP! We tried to get the little wedge thing and tried the rolled up blankets/towels and...SHE WOULD NOT SLEEP!
After several weeks of my staying up most of the night trying to quiet my somewhat colic inflicted newborn who only seemed to sleep when curled up on her belly on my chest or my husband's chest my husband had an AHA moment. :-) He laid her gently into her crib on her belly and something amazing happened... SHE SLEPT! ! ! Mommy got a break and she slept!
I struggled inside about the fact that I had her sleeping on her belly, then I thought... When I was born they stated that babies needed to sleep on their belly. When my sister was born they stated that babies needed to sleep on their backs. My cousin -- belly. My baby -- back. I decided that I had to do what seemed right to my baby & I. We settled on the belly sleep.
Funny thing, I started talking to several people with children who also had their babies sleep on their bellies and I felt a little better about it.
Sure, today's research is saying to lay the baby on his/her back. Sure, that probably means there are benefits to laying your baby on his/her back, but a parent can't beat themselves up over it if their little human chooses to only sleep on his/her stomach. In the end it is the parent's choice.
Good luck with your little ones! Ours is now almost 7 months old and she now sleeps on her belly, her side, and yes, occasionally on her back. :-)
