1. Crib

The Dream

NETTO Royal Blue Crib, $2,750, limited edition of 25

The holy grail of baby design. This is the crib in which your child will dream his first Architectural Digest photospread dreams and effortlessly absorb the meanings of "aesthetic integrity" and "Bauhaus."

The Reality

DwellStudio for Target Silver Lake Crib, $299.99

Target's more modestly priced modern crib is named after a swinging L.A. neighborhood and crafted from Asian hardwood with a walnut finish. Baby might as well learn the word "bargain" too.

2. Mobile

The Dream

Alexander Calder mobile, estimated $150,000-$500,000

Last November an untitled Calder mobile sold for $650,000 at Christie's Postwar and Contemporary Art auction. Overeager parents can bid on other Calder at Christie's as they come on the market.

The Reality

DIY Calder mobile thanks to WikiHow, free plus cost of materials ($75 if you buy the tools at Home Depot, $15 if you can borrow the pliers, drill and jigsaw)

Eleven steps, with pictures! You will need wood or heavy cardstock, wire, drill, clamp, jigsaw and needle-nose pliers. Comes with the added joy of one day revealing to your child that in a past life you were an absurdly talented American sculptor. Not crafty? You can also order a customized Caleresque mobile from Etsy, like this Neptune version for $75.

3. Bassinet

The Dream

Nest Bassinet, $999

It's very van der Rohe. But it's $999! It would look divine in our future Case Study house. But it's $999! Could store toys once baby has outgrown in just four months? Um, $999.

The Reality

Cariboo Folding Bassinet, $294

Hand-crafted in New Zealand, this sustainable wood bassinet will last until baby weighs twenty-two pounds and is aggressively demanding a sleek modern crib (see above).
