Tornado Safety Tips from the American Red Cross

Red Cross Tornado App

Violent tornadoes hit Oklahoma City and Tulsa today, and the National Weather Service has issued a tornado emergency for the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. More severe weather is expected tonight, so we’re sharing three important updates from the American Red Cross.

Download the Red Cross Tornado App:

The American Red Cross has a free Tornado Safety App to assist those in the path of the storm. If you call **REDCROSS (**73327677), the Red Cross will send you a link to download the app directly from the iTunes and Google Play App stores.

The App provides step-by-step instructions and safety content, which you can access even if you lose cell service, about what to do before, during and after a storm.  When a Tornado Warning is issued, the App will alert you with an audible siren, reducing your chance of sleeping through a warning.  When the warning expires, the App will send a push notification to let you know it is safe to leave your shelter/safe room.

Once the storm passes, you can let worried friends and family know that you’re safe using the “I’m Safe” notification feature, which shares your status through social media, text and email. In the event of an emergency, the App also contains a strobe light, flashlight and audible alert functions to help you signal to rescue workers.

Register If You Are “Safe & Well” or Search for Loved Ones Online:

The Red Cross of Oklahoma recently tweeted: “Let others know you are OK! Very critical in search & rescue efforts.” Oklahoma residents can visit “Safe & Well” website to register themselves after the storm passes.

Since first responders and emergency personnel will be very busy with relief and rescue efforts, please check the “Safe & Well” Registry on The American Red Cross Website for updates about friends and family rather than calling 911 or local hospitals.
