10 Top Austin Food Experiences

Shady GirlWill you be in Austin this summer?

Lot’s of us were in town this weekend for Blogher Food 2013.  While our focus was on the conference, of course, Austin food temptations were impossible to resist.

Austin’s laid-back creative culture and (relatively) low cost of operating has drawn some of the most talented foodies to the Lone Start state.  Phenomenal food truck parking lots.  Scads of James Beard award nominees.  Tacos at every turn.

When compared to the other big food cities in the US, Austin provides a much better value and a lot more fun.  $20 still goes a long way in Austin.

South of Town Lake and east of I35 are where you will find the best pockets of dining discoveries with less parking and tourist hassle.

A few Austin staples, a chain or two, and a few amazing newcomers.  Here is my take on 10 Top Austin Food Experiences you must not miss.

The Founder's Favorite will prove that Philly doesn't know cheesesteak like Texas knows cheesesteak. Technically a chain, but it started in Austin.
  • La Condesa 3 of 10
    La Condesa
The freshest cocktails. The craziest corn. Blow-your mind Mexican food all around. La Condesa is an experience. Pricier than your standard Tex-Mex, but worth it.

    Woodland
Cool decor on one of Austin's best strips, South Congress. Woodland continues to deliver interesting southern cooking.

    Tortilla Fried Catfish
Shady Grove has this Austin classic plus the amazing brandy margarita called The Shady Thang. Or make it at home with the recipe from The Food Network

Any taco with egg and cheese and/or potato from Tacodeli is going to blow your mind.

    uchi Sushi
You many not think sushi when you think Austin, but you will after visiting uchi ... that's IF you can get in.

    Amy's Ice Cream
Amy's Ice Creams is an Austin institution, and Mexican Vanilla with Strawberries can not be duplicated.
  • Franklin Barbeque 10 of 10
    Franklin Barbeque
Franklin Barbeque is worth the wait in the crazy-long, but kinda fun line.
