They say one of the best parts about having kids is getting to relive your childhood through their eyes. That’s never more true for me at Christmas time. My daughter loves this time of year as much as I do, and I have had so much fun participating in all the little holiday indulgences I’d otherwise be deemed too “old” for. I maintain that age has nothing to do with being able to enjoy cookies, candy, and Santa, but having my kids around certainly doesn’t hurt! These are my top eleven favorite ways to indulge in the holidays (and act like a kid again).

  • Chocolate Advent Calendars 1 of 11

My brother and I always had one of these growing up...and shh, but I've had one for myself the last few years, too. This year, my daughter is old enough to have her own calendar, but my son is not. Never fear, he still has one, and I have bravely offered to step up and eat his chocolate every day.

  • Singing Christmas Carols Over And Over And Over 2 of 11

Thanks to my multiple years in choirs, I know the words to dozens of holiday songs. I get away with singing them over and over by telling my husband I'm teaching them to our daughter. That's how she learns, Mike.

  • Chopping Your Own Tree 3 of 11
    chop down tree

My husband grew up chopping down his own Christmas trees. I never knew that was actually a "Thing:N ow his sister's family  going to chop down their Christmas bush, and we tag along when we can. Maybe this will be the year I let Annie pick out  a tree that Mik i

  • Decorating The Tree 4 of 11
    decorate tree

I go a little crazy and get multiple trees for our house. I let my daughter (and soon my son!) decorate the tree  however she wants. I love seeing how she decides to express herself, and it also lets me decorate my home's main tree however I'd like.

  • Wear Stocking Caps 5 of 11

Oh, who am I kidding? I never need an excuse to wear a jaunty cap.

  • It’s Cookie Time! 6 of 11
    dec cookies

Who doesn't love rolling out dough and cutting? I especially like sneaking bites when my daughter isn't looking. Heh heh heh.

  • Face Time With The Big Man 7 of 11
    meet santa

This year, Annie is beside herself with Santa-centric excitement, and I am, too. I just can't wait to see her and her brother on Santa's lap. It's going to be sooo cute.

  • Viewing The Holiday Lights 8 of 11
    see lights

When I was growing up, my family drove around the neighborhood to look at Christmas night at least once a week. I adore doing this with my kids. We put on our jammies, grab cups of hot chocolate, and pump up the Christmas music. Perfection!

  • Letters And Cookies To Santa 9 of 11

My daughter takes her letter writing very seriously. I look forward to helping her write her letter (and eat Santa's cookies) every year.

  • Matching Jammies 10 of 11

I think this is self-explainatory. The only thing I need is matching adult Jrammies!

  • Opening Presents 11 of 11
    open presents

I'm thirty-four and I still love opening presents! But nothing beats the joy on her face when she opens something she desperately wants.
