12 Comforting Soups for Winter

Brrrr, it’s cold out there! Wintertime forces us to stay inside more than we would prefer because of the dropping temperatures outside. One of my solutions to beating the winer blues is to hunker down and cook away! I like to get the entire family involved in chopping, mixing, seasoning, and of course sampling all the goodness in the kitchen. Sometimes I’ll even make three comforting soups at once so that we have plenty to choose from, plenty to last the entire week, and plenty to freeze for later! Nothing makes me feel better in the cold winter than a hearty, comforting soup. So a collection like this one is just what I need to keep my family’s bellies full and taste buds happy. Enjoy some cozy cuddle time with your family this winter, then get up and get those bodies moving in the kitchen to prepare some comforting soups together!

Do you have a wintertime inside activity tradition?

  • Spiced Carrot Cauliflower Soup 1 of 12

    Recipe and Photo by Weelicious!

The flavorful spice combination of curry, cinnamon, and garam masala partnered with the sweet taste of the carrots and creamy texture of the cooked cauliflower makes for one of the most flavorful soups you could imagine. While you're making it, let your kids smell and taste the spices. You can also let them shake them into the pot and even use a hand blender (pretty kid-safe with adult supervision) to puree everything together. They will really feel a part of the fun and it's a great way to introduce kids to the incredible world of spices.

  • Mexican Corn and Bean Soup 7 of 12

    Recipe and Photo by Weelicious!

It takes less than 15 minutes to put this hearty Mexican Corn and Bean Soup together, and it features a rainbow of nutritious veggies your kids are sure to love. The soup is incredibly flavorful, and while the cumin and chili powder might make you think it's spicy, the taste is actually quite mellow. I like to put out some grated cheddar or parmesan and a bowl of sour cream for my kids to sprinkle and dollop on top. I find that little touches like those make eating fun and allow little ones to make this soup their own.

  • Roasted Red Pepper Soup 9 of 12

Recipe and Photo by Simple Bites!

When you roast red peppers, you add tons of depth of flavor to them. They make the kitchen smell wonderful, and they take on a pleasant sweetness mixed with the smokiness from roasting. Blend them up into this Roasted Red Pepper Soup and serve with some warm crusty bread for a wonderful meal.

  • French Onion Soup 10 of 12

    Recipe and Photo by Weelicious!

I've been seeing the most beautiful onions at our local farmers' market, and I can never resist buying a bunch. As a kid, I wasn't the biggest onion fan, probably since my grandmother added them to everything and so the house always smelled strongly of them. Yet as the years have passed, I have come to love onions. While both of my kids have craved them raw from the time they could chew (go figure?!), I much prefer my mine cooked. Luckily, I never have to twist my kids' arms to get them eat onions, but when they're cooked down to a buttery perfection in this French Onion Soup and topped with bread cubes and gooey Swiss it brightens my onion-obsessed kids faces to a new onion-loving level. Big time happiness!
