A Three Year Old's Adventures During Coffee Harvest

We let our three year old play hooky from pre-school last week so that he could come to work with his mom and pop. So while dad was checking the moisture content of this year’s Burundi coffee harvest and I was photographing coffee farmers, Neo got to climb to the top of coffee bag towers and run his hands along tables full of coffee beans. Not a bad way to spend the day if you ask me.

Visiting our coffee washing station project with the kids is not always idyllic, sometimes it’s hot and tiring and in the end everyone is falling apart. Even so, I think it’s really important that we give our kids have a chance to “get it.” I want them to understand what it is that we do and why we feel that it is worthwhile work. I want them to know why we have made the CHOICE to live here. It’s sort of part of my, “Whatever you choose to do in life, do it with your WHOLE SELF!” mantra. It’s a mantra I’m still figuring out how to carry out every day, and a mantra to which my 6 year old usually replies, “I KNOW that mom, you already TOLD me.” Sorry son, because I am going to keep on repeating it, for about another 20 years or so.

Disney Story helped me organize this day quickly and easily into a fun digital story booklet that we have emailed to our oh-so-far-away Grandparents and friends. We are always looking for great ways to stay in touch with our far away family quickly and easily. If you want to give it a try you can download it from iTunes for FREE right here.
