Valentine’s Day is just way too full of pressure.
When you’re single you’re wondering if you’ll be alone or have a date. Or if you’ll get a card, candies, or flowers.
You’d think being married would change the equation for the better … no more lonely February 14th’s! No more uncertainty!
But for most of the people I talk to, it’s actually worse. Husbands and wives feel pressure to make sure their gifts are perfect, that the day is sufficiently romantic, and the card expresses the sentiment you know they’d want.
That’s ridiculous. Life is busy and challenging enough without trying to live up to some Hollywood expectations of what a romantic holiday must look like.
I know a couple who barely spoke for days after a Valentine’s Day went slightly sideways and didn’t meet their expectations. They would have been better off had they just agreed to ignore the day entirely.
Which I think is a great idea, actually.
Don’t set expectations for Valentine’s Day. Be gentle to your spouse if they get an overly generic card or if their present isn’t particularly romantic or if they forget the day entirely. It’s just a day. Don’t read too much into how it goes.
Instead? Pamper yourself. Give yourself a little something special. A little bit of luxury that you can kick back and enjoy. The best thing about getting a gift for yourself is that you’ll know you love it!
Need some inspiration? Here you go! Here are some items on my pampering wish list I recently found while perusing Pinterest:
1. Jose Maran Argan Infinity Cream
I’m told this is a makeup artist’s must-have item. It can moisturize both skin and lips, isn’t greasy, and can even be used to smooth away flyaway hairs and contour eyebrows. You can also mix it with powder makeup to create a cream … pure luxury during these cold winter months. Find it here for $28.
2. A Silk Pillow Case
I’ve known people who swear by silk pillow cases. They are kinder to sensitive facial skin, help prevent split ends (yay!), and just generally make resting your head feel like a luxurious experience. Find this one here for $75.
3. Angora Socks
Super soft and super lightweight but far warmer than wool (I’ve heard 8 times warmer!) … in this crazy cold weather what could take away the chills more deliciously than slipping on a pair of these adorable socks. So pretty too!
How about a little pampering for our feet? It’s those little things sometimes … Find them here $23.95.
4. Middle Colors Supersonic Humidifier
Is it home decor or a humidifier? It’s both! If your home is like mine, humidifiers are running often during the winter months. How great would it be to have some of these scattered around the home in various shades? Find them here for $119.99.
5. Bath and Body Works Aromatherapy Stress Relief Eucalyptus Spearmint Scented Candle
Does this really need explaining? Few things are more pampering than engaging your sense of smell with bright yet calming scents. This candle? Does that like a champion. Find it here for $20.
6. Bumble and Bumble Creme de Coco Shampoo and Conditioner
Seriously, isn’t this better than flowers anyway? The aroma alone … will take you right back to summer. Which is much needed these days! And you gotta love everything Bumble and Bumble … they can’t seem to make a product I don’t love. Find them here starting at $24 each.
7. Luxe Faux Fur Throws
How gorgeous are these? How amazing would it be to wrap up in one and read a book (or, well, work on your laptop?). I think a couple of these might be in order. Find them here, on sale for $79.
8. Godiva Truffles
Y’all didn’t think I’d let Valentine’s Day pass without some chocolates, did you? Nah. Godiva. If you’re going to indulge, do it right. Find them here.
So there you go. You’ve just received the perfect Valentine’s Day gift … from yourself.
What would you like to give yourself for Valentine’s Day?
