Does anyone else get those e-mails from the Good Men Project? Because if I were to develop an opinion purely based on those, I’d argue that it’s less a “new fatherhood rising” than a new masculinity rising. A masculinity that’s based less on dominance and that old but very real General Patton-ish ideal of strength and emotional distance, is bearing (if you will) a more modern version of men who realize you can be strong without being hard, and vulnerable without being a lily-livered surrender monkey. I think it’s actually been in the works for decades, but as the old guard dies out the balance may be slowly tipping in favor of a generation of males who are questioning what it means to be alpha. If James Bond can cry, you know something big must be shifting.
