Fall is our favorite time to head out of town in the Worthington household. It seems odd to some people; many are settling in after the summer vacation season…others are gearing up for the upcoming holiday rush. It’s precisely because of that that we love hitting the road at this time of year. Hotels have great availability, prices are generally down, attractions are less crowded… it’s an all around win for us. What are some of the things we like to do in the fall? Glad you asked! Whether it’s a day trip, weekend getaway, or full-fledged vacation, these are all great ways to take advantage of the great time of year. Here are some of our favorite fall family getaway ideas:
Head into nature and revel in the changing colors. We love piling into our car and heading out into the countryside. Whether it’s a visit to a relative’s house or renting a creekside cabin in the woods, the fall is a great time to do this. The hot muggy summer months are gone and we can enjoy some mosquito free evenings watching the sun set while the boys toss around a football. Side note: While the boys play football all year, there is something about tossing that ball around in the crisp autumn weather that just feels more RIGHT.
The reason is the “Deal Season.” Does your family enjoy theme parks? Amusement pars? Both? You’re in during the fall. The long lines of summer are no more, and they are looking to sell some tickets. The industry calls this time of year Deal Season because they are discounts… and so do area hotels and restaurants. Save money AND avoid battling crowds and hot weather while I’m at it? YES PLEASE.
Big lights bright city. The tourists are mostly gone, school field trips haven’t usually gotten up and running yet… so hit the town, baby! Those museums, restaurants, and even taxi cabs will be all yours! The sidewalks tend to be less crowded, you don’t have to wait as long for your meals (a huge plus when you have hungry kids!), and if your kids aren’t perfectly behaved at the science exhibit there are far fewer raised eyebrows thrown your way.
What’s your favorite time of year to get away with your family?
