I love being a powered parent and being connected. I love technology, I love my electronics and I particularly adore my cellphone. The problem with that adoration is that I now have accumulated a small drawer with old phones and accessories I don’t need. I will take a wild guess that many of you have discarded electronics during the holiday season.
I certainly don’t want to add to the landfills which are inundated with over 140 million cellphones every year. These phones are contributing to dirty our environment with nasty plastic and toxic waste.
There are many ways to recycle old cellphones and various electronics so the parts can be reused, but I know that the phone I used for a mere two years could have a much more extended and useful life. I also know that if I choose wisely where to donate my phones I will also be contributing to making someone’s life easier, happier or more enriching. I like that option.
I found 5 ways you can give your cellphones a new life and give back to a cause at the same time.
Send your used cellphone to Hope Phones and they will get credit for the value of it through their recycling program. The amount raised goes to MedicMobile to purchase new mobile technology like life-saving texts in rural communities in the developing world that have no immediate access to medical care.
You can print a pre-paid shipping label to donate your phones. Find out more at HopePhones.org.
2. Sprint Project Connect
You don’t need to be a Sprint customer to donate your phones, batteries, accessories and data cards to Sprint Project Connect. All collected funds from recycling the phones will be put towards promoting free internet safety and cyber-bullying resources for kids, parents and educators through their 4NetSafety program. Parents know how important it is to have these resources available to us and kids these days. This helps make it available to all.

3. Cellphones for Soldiers
Help our active duty military and veterans stay in touch with their families and loved ones. The cellphones you donate are sold to a recycling partner and the funds are used to purchase calling cards and other communication tools for the U.S. Military.
You can find a local drop-off location or ship your phones. Find all info on the CellphonesforSoldiers.com.
Verizon’s cellphone recycling initiative, HopeLine, aids victims and survivors of domestic violence and abuse as they rebuild their lives. According to their site, “Nearly one in four women, one in seven men, and over 3 million children have been affected by domestic violence.” When you donate your used cellphone you give hope and connection to these survivors.
