On Saturday, November 10th, my family and I got to “work” our first red – or in this case, lavender – carpet together for the premiere of Disney’s Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess movie and storybook. I’ve attended and even produced several red carpets, but none has been as fun and endearing as this one at the Walt Disney Studios Main Theatre because my husband was working the camera and our 5-year-old girl was the charming assistant no one could say no to!
We were assigned a spot on the carpet and we set ourselves up and got the chance to talk to many of the Sofia the First cast members – like the fabulous Sara Ramirez and Darcy Rose Byrnes – as well as to celebrities – like Lou Diamond Phillips – that were there with their own little princesses and princes to witness the debut of Princess Sofia of Enchantia, voiced by Ariel Winter.

After the lavender carpet we rushed into the theater where Nancy Kanter, Senior VP of Original Programming for Disney Junior, welcomed us all and introduced the crew and the cast that was in the audience with us, including Ariel Winter who voices Sofia. By then my girl was gushing with anticipation for the movie to start. She already knew all the lines from the promos by heart, so this moment had been long-awaited. Little did she know she was part of Hollywood animation history.
We weren’t disappointed at all. The movie is as magical as little princesses are. Sofia has a huge heart, real emotions and a brave soul. The story starts on the day she’s welcomed by King Roland II, her new step father, into the royal castle and is introduced to her new family, including Prince James and the not-so-nice Princess Amber. Sofia is in awe of her new royal life, but is hit with fear when the King tells her she’ll be dancing the first waltz with him the day of the Royal Ball. She freaks out and has to figure out how to learn to dance within a few days and act as princess-proper as possible . Of course, she encounters opposition from Princess Amber as she tries to boycott Sofia’s princess training at the Royal Prep Academy.
You’ll have to tune into the Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess movie premiere on November 18 on the Disney Channel and November 22 on Disney Junior to find out what happens with Sofia at the ball and why she gets a surprise visit from Cinderella herself.
