i’m a mean, horrible mommy AKA why my kid doesn’t have a cell phone
My 8yo was on the phone with a friend.
A landline.
How archaic!
I heard my daughter’s classmate ask, “Do you have an IPhone? So we can text?”
“No,” my daughter answered mournfully.
“Well, what do you text with?” the friend asked, obviously bewildered at this answer.
“I don’t have a cellphone,”….you could almost hear her finish the sentence “BECAUSE MY MOMMY DOESN’T LOVE ME”.
They chattered a few minutes more about Peyton’s unfortunate phone circumstances. Then finished with plans to see each other after spring break.
**SIDE NOTE: that would be the spring break where I’m taking the kids on a trip to Florida. Instead of paying for a new IPhone 7.
After the hangup, Peyton questioned the decision to keep her phone-less.
I thought about it.
The room she rarely kept clean.
The receipt for the books she’d lost and had to pay to replace.
The lunchbox she forgets to empty on Friday, and on Monday has nice pungent aroma.
The stuff she just puts down and leaves behind because she’s DONE. (LIKE THE CHICKEN WING WE FOUND IN THE VAN FOUR DAYS LATER) (BINGO!)
I could have spent hours coming up with reasons she wasn’t ready to have a smartphone.
But I didn’t.
I came up with one and it was one that she wasn’t going to argue.
“You can have a phone for texting when you match up your own socks and put them away.”
She hung her head as she left.
Mom = 1
8yo = 0
FTW!

I don’t get this thing where kids who are not old enough to go out in public without adult supervision have cell phones. If you wouldn’t feel confident dropping your kids off at the movie theater without an adult chaperone, there is no need for them to have a cell phone.
*High five* I am with ya. Seriously, when did evolution occur? Pre teens and teens with smart phones. Gimme a break.
If I don’t have one my kids wont have one. :P
My oldest had his first cell phone at 12, and that was my mothers doing. But she also felt since he was home alone alot that he needed it. As we did not have a home phone. He would have to IM me on my husbands computer when he got home before that. It really was not a good set up.
The phone was very simple and no texting, just for purposes of calling family.
Of course here we are now at 16 almost 17 and he now has one that can text and also has an iPod touch and his own laptop lol.
Now to see how long it is before my 8 yr old starts asking for a cell phone sigh lol
i am the mean mom that says…
My 13 year old cannot get a cell phone.
My kids cannot have computers or TVs in their bedrooms.
Their iPod accounts are my iPhone account so that I know what they’re doing, listening to, and watching.
I’m a mean mom and my kids will be at least a little better for it.
I fear when these days come-cuz there is no way my kiddies will have cell phones till they are driving!! it’s crazy that people now think this should be a way of life-a cell phone is a luxury at that as well as a Huge distraction!! I used to watch a couple school age girls that would come over with the latest iPods, those hand held video games and yes even cell phones! It’s nuts and the kids are not grateful for them, they are spoiled rotten yet feel entitled to have more. Yikes it makes me nervous for my four year old and 17month old-both girls. Bravo to you for sticking to your guns!!
