As I landed after midnight at JFK airport, I couldn’t stop smiling. I could barely contain my excitement at being a guest on the TV show “The Chew” with Daphne Oz, Carla Hall, Michael Symon, Mario Batali and Clinton Kelly. It all happened so fast that it seemed surreal. It was even crazier to realize how every single thing I have done professionally led me to that moment.
If you’ve been following my adventures on my blog or on social media, you probably know by now that most of my career has been in Spanish. As a bilingual Latina, though, it has always been my dream to work in both English and Spanish, to reflect my real life, which happens to be bilingual and switches back and forth between cultures, languages, and even countries. I have done TV appearances in English already, but the truth is that being a guest on a national TV show on ABC made me giddy and felt like one more dream coming true. To be there representing Babble filled me with even more pride and I feel so thankful for the support I have felt since I became a Babble Voices contributor with my blog Mamifesto in 2012. Of course it’s a huge responsibility, especially when you also want to share tips from the Cans Get You Cooking campaign, on which I am collaborating as well.
So what is it like to be a guest on “The Chew“? Aside from nerve-wracking, it was one incredible experience. It is so well produced that I was impressed from the minute I was on the phone with its producers. You can feel the great energy everybody on the team shares as soon as you walk into the studios. Even the show’s hosts are not only true pros, but also super welcoming and that is always a huge help when you’re a guest. Of course there was a glam squad that helped me be camera-ready, including celebrity makeup artist Shon Michaux and Emmy-winning hairstylist Jamar. And since there is tons of yummy food on the show, there is an entire team that helps all ingredients be prepped and ready to be used by the talented hosts.
Daphne Oz, who is expecting her first baby, was a joy to work with. I am not a chef. I am merely a working mom that tries to do the best I can, even at dinnertime. She had no problem guiding me through her delicious pumpkin fritters recipe. We had so much fun! Celebrity chef Carla Hall, whom I have admired for years, was also as nice in person as she is on camera and chef Michael Symon’s energy was contagious.
