Better In Aruba: Five Simple Things Our Kids Won’t Stop Talking About

My children are simple creatures, honestly. It doesn’t take much to delight and entertain them. It also doesn’t take much to thoroughly overwhelm and exhaust them.

When we first arrived at the Westin Resort & Casino in Aruba, we were greeted by a friendly representative of the Westin Kids Club and handed an itinerary of activities for our stay. And I admit: I panicked a little. My kids — especially my special-needs oldest — are notoriously unpredictable about planned or scheduled activities. Even (nay, especially) for “fun” things that every other child on earth loves to do. If there’s gonna be a non-joining stubborn little oddball of the group. it’s likely going to be someone I gave birth to.

It turned out — AS USUAL — I was worrying over nothing. My kids loved every activity the Westin Kids Club had to offer. And I loved how truly laid-back and understanding the Kids Club staff members were. They cared way more about our kids having a blast than any schedule or pre-planned itinerary: When we discovered that Noah and Ezra LOST THEIR COLLECTIVE MINDS over water balloons, well, by all means, LET’S DO MORE WATER BALLOONS.

Here are just five of the Westin Kids Club activities that completely, thoroughly delighted my children. (There are more, OH SO MANY MORE, so please continue to stay tuned while I mine the depths of my camera’s memory card and sift through the 1,300 photos we took, and no, that number isn’t an exaggeration at all.)

    Marshmallow roasting!
On Friday nights, there's a campfire and all-you-can-eat roasted marshmallows. Ezra discovered the joy of being allowed to set food on fire on purpose.

    Playgrounds!
Even playgrounds are better in Aruba, when you realize what kind of SPECTACULAR view there is at the top of this rock wall. Noah watched the sunset in total awe.

    Marshmallow EATING!
    Oh nom nom nom nom.
  • Sandcastles! 6 of 10
    Sandcastles!
I admit my castle-building skills are pretty weak, as is my tolerance for sand in general. No worries, the Westin Kids Club folk are more than happy to get down and dirty while creating castles and moats with your kids.

Ezra joined a team for a watermelon eating contest, oh em gee.
