Bow of Approval: Anna Sui x Minnie Mouse Collection

Back in 2009 I worked with Vivienne Tam, and even as I was standing in her SoHo loft during fashion week surrounded by very important people, very beautiful clothes and wearing one of her dresses myself — what impressed me most about Vivienne was the fact that she had designed clothes for Mickey and Minnie.

Minnie and I? We share the same designer.

That was way before I even dreamed of being a Minnie Messenger and still to this day the true mark of a designer for me is “Have they designed for Minnie?” I was just with Minnie last week and she pulled of her purple witch costume on Halloween just as well as her feather trimmed evening gown the night before— when it comes to fashion, Minnie can do no wrong, which means whenever she collaborates with a designer I know it’s going to be good. She doesn’t just give her bow of approval to anyone.

Anna Sui x Minnie Mouse

Enter the Anna Sui x Minnie Mouse collection for holiday 2013. Why does makeup need to be branded along with a cartoon character you ask? What’s the point? Well let me tell you a little about Minnie. Minnie can be anything, be friend with anyone, plant a garden, bake some cookies then drive her convertible out to a night on the town. She’s fancy, she’s domestic, she’s zesty, she’s caring, she’s independent but she’s also loyal. When I think about all the people out there trying to sell me makeup — celebrities, fresh faced teenagers who don’t know what life with a newborn is like, I rather enjoy the idea of Minnie greeting me from my makeup bag. She doesn’t NEED makeup to be fabulous, but she knows the power of a good mascara and bold lip. While my daughters are years away from makeup themselves, I much prefer the example Minnie sets over so many other celebrities out there.

She’s simply timeless.

Now let’s talk about that lipstick. HOW COULD YOU EVEN BRING YOURSELF TO USE IT? I would drag my lip brush all up and down the sides until it was just Minnie’s winking face on a sliver of red lipstick. And the polishes? Forgetaboutit. Bottles too cute to ever be tossed.

The Anna Sui x Minnie Mouse 2013 Holiday beauty collection is available from Beautylish. $16-$50.
