On Being SuperGirl, And Dancing With Jordan Knight

By |

The New Kids On The Block were never really my jam when I was younger. I was more into Depeche Mode and and The Cure and adorable boy bands just weren’t, you know, emo enough for me. That said, I did know who they were and I did, maybe, know all the words to Step By Step, because I do know a catchy rhythm when I hear it. Also, I did think that Jordan Knight was kind of cute, although you would never have been able to wring that confession out of me, even on pain of smashing all my Smiths cassettes.

And, wouldn’t you know, knowing all the words to Step By Step came in handy when, at the ripe awesome age of 41, I found myself singing that song on a karaoke stage with Jordan Knight. In a SuperGirl costume, of course, because that’s how you do these things.

Of course, I didn’t expect that it would end up on Entertainment Weekly. I might have worn more opaque tights if I had.

(You didn’t know that mom blogger conferences got that crazy, did you? Mom bloggers work hard, and they PLAY hard. KNOW THAT.)

I was that same sort of girl. I was at least one year ahead of the girls that went crazy loco over NKOTB, and I was way more into depeche, the cure, and new order.. but I did like Hangin Tough :) So fun to have a great memory like that, and love that Blissdom Canada got EW level media attention. I enjoyed reading the tweets people sent from your speaking, and I love your Supergirl costume, your hair has gotten long again!

In grade 7, my French Immersion teacher was trying to teach us the word for “step”. For some reason, we just couldn’t get it. So she sang, albeit in French, Step by Step. I will never forget that word.

LOVE this post! I was a squealing NKOTB fan as a girl. Yep, and I just admitted it, too. Too bad I can’t get into their new stuff. Just not the same.

I really loved geittng to hang out with you at Blissdom, Brie. We haven’t had a lot of opportunities in Ottawa, so it was worth the trip just for that! Since our friends are the same, I’d say #6 is absolutely correct. And your attitude is so positive, which I really love about you. Wherever your blog takes you, I hope you know that you’re incredibly talented and I look forward to seeing what happens!
