In this so-called post-racial society that we live in racism seems to be alive and well. In fact, it is more rampant than other. Which makes sense if you think about it, in that bigots feel ‘forced’ to live under the ‘tyranny’ of the Obama administration so, they like to tell the collective you how they really feel. Which, fine, First Amendment and all.
Years ago, had I seen someone using the word ‘n*gger’ on Twitter I would have fell out, straight to the floor, possibly dead. Now? It’s par for the course. Oh, someone called the President a horrible name? Yawn. Someone else said that the First Lady has a ‘fat ass’? Double Yawn.
The anger is a manifestation of a reality that nothing will change until 2016. Also because despite puzzling policies as of late – the sequester, use of drones on Americans, and why exactly is Guantanamo still open? – the Obamas have Beatle like status.
They are loved. People LOVE them. Their life/lifestyle is aspirational. Hell, I almost got bangs the other day because if Michelle can do it, so can I . It’s why we are so mesmerized by her hair, the J.Crew finds, if that dress was purchased at Target and what exactly is Malia’s dating life like. We see ourselves in them and even though they hold the title of the Most Powerful Couple in the World, we still find them so…NORMAL. And COOL. So COOL. Like, I’d want them to come have a beer with me and then Dougie.
Mrs. Obama often makes the rounds to discuss her Let’s Move! campaign that aims to get parents and children focused on healthy eating and exercise. Last year she was on Ellen:
Yesterday? Yesterday she rocked it on Jimmy Fallon.
Today? People are in awe to see a First Lady dance. I’ve seen tweets of I LOVE HER, in between other hateful tweets of course because no matter the amount of awesome dropped by the First Couple, to many they will remain far beneath the positions they hold. And for the rest of us? Well, that means more YouTube watching, imitating just the hands part of Single Ladies. So many of us dig the ‘Evolution of Mom Dancing’ because, let’s face it, we’ve all been there. Once again, we see ourselves in this couple. And so I say kudos to them for doing the damn thing and for making so many of us yell out YOU’RE SO AWESOME! I LOVE YOU!
