Check Your Freaking Bag !!!

As parents we set examples that our children learn from. I saw this woman with two kids going through the airport. ALL of them were carrying suitcases to carry on the plane. I believe, that is teaching a child not to be considerate of fellow travelers. Hear me out …

I travel a lot in my line of work.  I got to say, the price of flying has gone up and it affects us all. On top of the flight, we are now being charged the goofy “baggage fees.” I can appreciate people trying to save money on checked luggage by carrying bags on. After all, the last time my crew flew American Airlines, I was charged $1300 each way for gear. It doesn’t cost the airlines any more money to fly 2 of your bags than it costs for them to fly one of your bags. The “Luggage fee” went into effect when the price of fuel went up to help absorb the added expense of the airlines.  But, fuel charges are heading back down and  the airlines are charging even more for bags, which is bullshit. (This is unless you fly Southwest airlines, then you get to check 2 bags for free.)

I flew with my husband and two children today, out of Midway airport, one of the Southwest hubs. To start, security was ridiculous. The lines were crazy long. It took us 35 minutes to get through. The reason is, people have to bring everything they own on the plane. No one stops to think about anyone else when they’re traveling. They don’t consider that the trunk of possessions they carry on the plane may inconvenience other passengers. They are focused on themselves only. I’m flying with two kids and my carry-on ALWAYS fits under the seat in front of me. It drives me crazy to see folks with mammoth suitcases boarding the plane. It’s selfish and inconsiderate.

I had a tour manager once, who was so happy when I would fly with my son. He used to get the “pre board” pass and get on the plane first so he could load his 2 rolling, overstuffed, carry-ons on the plane. A total “bin hog.”  Once he pre-boarded in Denver. Put his bags in the overhead bin and left me, my husband, and our eight-month-old at the gate.

So listen up, all you bin hogs out there. Know this: it is YOU that makes security move at a snail’s pace. You are the ones that make boarding a plane take forever while you search for space and try to force your gargantuan bag into a that tiny little overhead bin. And then you slow down the process of getting off the plane by trying to move against traffic to get your bag that is in a further back compartment, because the space by you was already filled beyond capacity. Be considerate of other flyers and downsize a bit on your carry-on luggage.

And if you fly Southwest, for God’s sake, check your freaking bags.
