Choosing Your Family's Portrait Wardrobe Using Target and Pantone's 2012 ColorsKristen Howerton
I am a major geek about two things: color/design and family portraits. I love good design, and I love curating. As a result, each year I spend a significant amount of energy coming up with the color scheme for our holiday family portraits. I like the portraits to capture our family, but I also like to get photos that capture the era as well, so I try to choose timely colors paired with on-trend clothing. I’m also not a fan of the matchy-matchy clothes in family photos, so I try to keep our colors coordinated while mixing prints and solids. Trying to coordinate these outfits for six people can be a challenge, but it’s one I enjoy.
I usually buy all of our pieces at Target. I love Target because I can count on them having on-trend clothing that I can afford, and because I can buy all of the pieces in one place, throwing the clothing in my cart and comparing what works with what.
Okay, I’ve got a bit of narrowing down to do, but I feel excited about all the great options I found. For my color scheme this year, I decided to look at Pantone’s picks for 2012. (Did you know that Pantone picks colors for each year, culling from fashion and graphic design to determine what colors are hot for each season? I told you I’m a dork). Here’s Pantone’s picks for 2012:
I narrowed it down to four colors. Here’s option A (using jeans we already own for myself and the boys):
This option went a little heavier on the grey and yellow, a combo I’m really digging this season. Option B is using more grey, blue, and pink.
I like the bright colors of Option B, and I think the blues and pinks will compliment each of the kid’s coloring and skin tones. However, I also started wondering if I should try to mix and match a bit more. Option C includes both the blue and pink, AND the grey and yellow combo.
What do you guys think? Which is your favorite clothing combo? We’re having our portraits done shortly – I will check back in and share the final product with you!
