“Dan, you always write about making time for yourself as a parent, but how do you do it if you can’t afford a babysitter and you don’t have family nearby to help you watch your kids?”
This was an email I just got, and since starting Single Dad Laughing, I’ve been asked this many times.
The answer is simple.
And I’d even go as far as to say nifty difty.
Do a babysitter swap.
The way it works is this. You and four or five other families who need babysitting all get together and take turns babysitting all of the kids.
One week you take everybody’s kids. The next several weeks the other couples take turns taking all the kids. And you all just rotate it on a continual basis.
Then, everybody gets a lot of nights out and nobody has to come up with babysitting cash.
Easy as pie.
“But Dan, I don’t know enough people to do that.”
Eh. Stop making excuses. You have neighbors, Facebook friends, and your real friends. All you need is at least one other person to find one other person to find one other person. It’s like the ultimate multi-level marketing, only you’re not in the business of draining each other of money.
I did this with my wife when we were married and it was INSANELY awesome. The nights out together were awesome, but the nights in babysitting a bazillion kids were somehow even awesomer. It’s a lot of fun entertaining that many kids for the evening.

PS. Have any of you tried a babysitter swap before? Did you love it as much as I did?
