Did you know about Make A Difference Day 10/27 ?

I was asked to participate in “Make A Difference Day.” It’s nationwide this Saturday, October 27th. It’s a chance for everyone to get out and volunteer to make a difference in their community. I thought it was a wonderful event, so to kick it off I went down to our local food bank with a group called Hands On Nashville. This organization helps set people up with volunteer opportunities in our local area. While I was there I found out some incredible statistics. The one that blew me away was that in the Nashville, area 1 out of 4 children have limited access to food. Who would have thought that? Nashville is a beautiful city. It’s a land of dreams. Heck, it even has its own TV show now. Nowhere in my mind did I even begin to imagine that 1 out of 4 kids were starving.

I kicked off the event with a couple of songs for the folks that came down to volunteer. After that we all got together to sort out “backpack” food for kids in the community. Certain children will report to their counselor’s office on Friday afternoon and will be given a bag filled with food to feed them and their siblings over the weekend until they can get back to school (where they participate in assisted lunch programs). All I could think of while packing these bags was about the kids on the receiving end. THIS is their food for 2 days. THIS is all they have. It touched me so much that I wanted to share my experience with you.

This Saturday, be a part of those who make a difference.  Get out and volunteer in your community. YOU CAN Make a difference.
