Okay, so I’ll admit that while I’ve heard people talking about Doctor Who and its cult classic status, I never paid it much attention. But, then I was at the library on the hottest day of the year (hello, heat wave), and I saw “Doctor Who, The Complete First Series” and I thought that I would give it a whirl. Let me admit, I was a bit doubtful. You see, I’m not a big sci-fi fan. My husband was a LOST junkie, and I even had a friend who wrote for the show, but I just had no patience for the suspension of reality that science-fiction fans willingly submit too.
But, then I watched the first episode of the 2005 series (not a reboot, but a continuation of the series according to my fine friends at Wikipedia), and guess what?
I’m hooked. I dig the TARDIS, the plastic people coming to life, the time travel and sweet Rose. I’m reminded that I used to watch The Twilight Zone marathons with my older brother and while they sometimes (often!) creeped me out, I loved em just the same. Doctor Who is like that. Who is the Doctor anyway? Why does Rose willingly hop into the TARDIS? Guess what? I’m invested, people. I want to know more.
It’s an important message for my kids, too. My oldest son is a science and math fan, but he refuses to get into anything fantasy related. While all of his friends are busy devouring Harry Potter, my boys says “I’m just not interested in things that aren’t real.” But what is real, anyway? Let’s hop into the TARDIS and find out. Boys, we’re watching Doctor Who.
Do we have any other Doctor Who fans here? I’d love to hear what keeps you coming back for more. I know that I’m late to the game, but I’m one of you now….
