Instant Indispensability

By |

Well, it turns out that I was able to successfully metabolize a computer into our lives. I mean — oh, hell, what’s the word? Manifest! I have manifested my destiny, and it’s a touchscreen computer that’s bigger than every single TV in our house.

First us old folks had to sit around and look at it for awhile.

Then Jackson bravely signed in to Poptropica using some sort of imaginary space-keyboard!

It wasn’t long before Netflix reared its head. (Last year Jackson’s school had “Come As Your Favorite Character Day” and Jackson put on a tie and told everyone he was Jack Donaghy. Just for context here.)

Things got serious when he took off his jacket, brought out a pillow and blankets, and asked for a snack.

Things got even more serious when he asked for the iPad so he could play games while continuing to plow through season five of 30 Rock.

Eventually, the whole show had to come to a halt so he could do his homework. Naturally, he wanted to incorporate his new friend into his lessons.  The query “I wonder if Johnny Tremaine is online anywhere?” led us to Google books, but he quickly discovered that on-screen reading is not his bag.

Liz Lemon benevolently watched over his scholarship.

Many thanks to Dell and Babble for providing me with a Dell Inspiron, and with another to give away to a reader! This post is part of my (4)-part series on how technology fits into my home/family life, sponsored by Dell. See my other posts, and posts from other writers, at the Dell Family Tech page.

About the giveaway: this giveaway will run until Friday, October 28th at 11:59 p.m. EDT and is open to all U.S. residents. A winner will be chosen at random using Random.org from all eligible entries. Each reader has four (4) chances to win by leaving a separate comment on each of my Dell posts, and Dell posts by other bloggers participating in this campaign (you can find those posts at the Family Tech topics page). The chosen winner must respond within 48 hours of notification to claim their prize. Good luck!

  14. Wendi says:

  15. sarah says:

I HATE when I realize that my husband and I are both fiddling with our smartphones when we are supposed to be watching TV (this happens during biggest loser, but never FNL, go figure). It’s the best clue that whatever we’re watching isn’t working for us. If we had an ipad, it’d be over. Never would watch tv again.

  16. Erik says:

Ok, it sounds horribly selfish but it”s the first time I’ve shouted Me Me Me since I was a kid.

  28. Valerie says:

I love the whole ignoring-the-one-computer-to-play-with-another-one thing. That reminds me of something my Dad used to do during baseball games — he’d turn down the sound on the TV and listen to the game on the radio. Anyone else?

  29. Lisa says:

    Looks like an awesome computer!!

  30. Erika says:

  42. Linda Noble says:

Sounds like the apple (heh) doesn’t fall far from the tree! He’s as much of a techie as you!

  43. colina says:

I don’t know what’s more beautiful — the desk, the computer, or the 30Rock

  44. FlippyO says:

Ironic that my Dell laptop died a few days ago. My iTouch is nice, but the typing is tedious. Then again, I’d probably use a new computer to catch up on 30 Rock, too.

  45. Ariana says:

Interesting how even someone from the ahem….”younger” generation prefers reading in an old fashioned book. That said, my novel I am writing on a failing computer, not a paper notebook, and I can already hear it shouting out with sheer joy at the prospect of finding a new home in a computer that I do not have to hit when I turn it on to make the electronic bars shooting across the screen go away.

  46. NP says:

good technology and good tv cuts across generations

  47. privoyne says:

I can’t read books off a screen, either.

  48. Kate says:

“I want to go to there.”

  49. MP says:

The kids would go crazy for a touchscreen. Their fingers are all over the screen anyhow. Imagine if their touches actually caused something to happen…

  50. Leigh-Ann says:

Our cats need a new computer… they’re tired of sharing a keyboard.
