Eyeliner 101

Have you noticed the enormous amount of eyeliner options these days? I mean, I really appreciate such a robust product selection, but COME ON, we don’t have all day to experiment with this stuff. We’re moms. We’re busy. Applying black winged eyeliner was not on my to-do list this morning. (OR WAS IT?)

Let’s break it down, shall we? Here are the 6 most commonly used eyeliners with some of my favorite YouTube tutorials demonstrating the best way to apply each type.

  • Pencil Eyeliner 1 of 6
    Pencil Eyeliner
The easiest product to use, in my opinion. Just run it across the base of your lashes, and you're good to go.
Tutorial: Carly Loves Cosmetics (Yes, she's probably 20 years younger than most of us, but deal with it.)
  • Gel Eyeliner 2 of 6
    Gel Eyeliner

I use this for nights out or if I need my liner to last for 8+ hours at a time.
    Tutorial: It's Judy Time
  • Liquid Eyeliner 3 of 6
    Liquid Eyeliner

Liquid eyeliner is perfect for the "cat eye" look.
    Tutorial: Makeup by Doda
  • Shadow Eyeliner 4 of 6
    Shadow Eyeliner
The great thing about using shadow as a liner is that you can build to your desired intensity.
    Tutorial: Send the Trend
  • Cream Eyeliner 5 of 6
    Cream Eyeliner
Cream eyeliner is very similar in consistency to gel eyeliner, and can be applied in the same way. I also use creams for easy, everyday eye shadows.
  • Jumbo Eyeliner 6 of 6
    Jumbo Eyeliner
Applied just like a pencil, this eyeliner creates a thicker line, and is fool-proof. Just blend with your finger, and you're ready for the day.
