The rug project has turned out pretty great. Not only did I get to put a rug in my living room but I added a large picture to the blank wall that ended up completing the room in its entirety. Before I show you the finished product I have to ask: does everyone confuse the living rooms and family rooms? I never know which is which. Do we live in the living room and use family rooms just for formal family occasions? Or do we live in family rooms? I never can tell. The is probably why it’s taken me so long to own a home on my own. I can’t even use the right names for the rooms in my house.
This is why I can’t have nice things.
Except, I do have a nice new rug thanks to Home Depot. Honestly, if I didn’t work with them on this campaign I don’t know how long it would have taken for me to finish off the living room (family room? WHAT?) that our family never uses. It’s been the catch-all room for things we’ve borrowed (luggage, baby gates for the dog when she hurt her back) and a place to dump things that no one wants to have out where it can be seen. Extra camera equipment gets thrown in the armoire, clothes that my sons plan on taking back and forth to their father’s house, and flyers that are hitting our doorsteps with increasing regularity during this political season. Once a month or so I end up looking at it and telling myself that I will clean it up but it’s not high on my priority list. Until now. Now, it’s a room that I long to be in even though it doesn’t have curtains on the windows. Right now, that’s still not a priority because there are tall hedges out in front of my house that provide cover. Yet, it still lets in a lot of light so that I can spend my Saturday mornings in there reading books.
Even though I don’t know the proper name for the room I just finished decorating, I love it. Naturally, that led me to move around some furniture, transfer some of the decorations I have in other parts of my home, and gave me an excuse to fill a wall that has long been blank since I’ve moved in a little over 2 years ago.
The rug I chose has some rich, maroon tones on the edges and has a cream-colored center with gold and teal green colors. Since the couch is really bland and I could pretty much come up with any color scheme I went with something really deep in color. I found it in the sale section of rugs that were 8 x 10 when I shopped at Home Depot. Oddly enough, what brought me over to the sale section was this bookcase that I had previously chosen when I worked with Home Depot before. It’s like it was calling my name and begging me to come over.
Really what I needed here was a push. I just wasn’t motivated to work on a room because I knew I needed to do something but then Home Depot came along and gave me that push. I mean, sure, I spent some extra money on a framed picture for the room, but at least it’s finished now and I can happily spend time in it. Not only did they give me flooring ideas, but they gave me room ideas and I can cross this off my list of things to work on in my home.
Now, if I can only tackle that bedroom of mine. First, I have a lot of laundry to get done. Admittedly, I have more than one junk armoire in this house.
Rugs for Sale 1 of 5The sale rugs where I found my rug for $129. It's an 8x10 to fit my room and I loved being able to feel them all with my hands before purchasing one. It felt better because it was on sale, I swear.
Bright Lights, Big Living Room 2 of 5The front windows of my living room let in a lot of light which makes me want to spend more time there.
Blank Wall 3 of 5The rug fits nicely with my glass coffee table and actually matches the lamp shades I bought from a thrift store a year ago. Being able to see some of the wood floor underneath was also important to me because I like the way it looks.
The Junk Armoire 4 of 5We shove things in this armoire that we don't want to see and it currently holds the Halloween candy that I'm trying not to eat before the trick-or-treaters arrive. But, the rich cherry wood of this armoire looks great next to the rug.
Add a picture! 5 of 5When I was finished, I realized how blank the wall seemed so I went back out to buy a picture that would complement the rug and finish off the room. Now, I love spending time here. The only problem is that everyone else in my family wants to be here, too.
