It’s My Life! Why I Chose To Remove My Own Breasts (Video)

Six years ago, Breast Cancer Awareness Month took on a whole new and personal meaning for me. After much thought, research and prayer, I made the difficult decision to have a preventive mastectomy. Yeah, preventive, as in, there was no breast cancer, well at least not at that time. But I was having a lot of trouble and it was clear to me that something was not right.

I chose to play offense and part of that, was having a preventive mastectomy. As the daughter of two breast cancer survivors, I was at high risk for the disease and my risk only increased when I was diagnosed with a pre-cancerous condition.

But what took me by surprise was the reaction by some to the choices I made about my own life. Here’s my story.

Yo! Nice to meet you! You can find out more about me on my blog, Good Enough Mother.

As the daughter of a Breast Cancer survivor I know that fear when you do your monthly self exam. What if you find something? What will you do? What if it’s too late? It just steamrolls into how will my children live without me? All in a matter of seconds.
I applaude your decision. Taking control of your own health, signifigantly lowering your risk is worth it in my opinion.
I would definitely do it if I felt it would lower my risk. My mom’s cancer was estrogen linked. Not a whole lot I can do with that one…I refuse to do the BRAC testing. I just don’t want to be considered uninsurable before anything even happens. They SAY that doesn’t happen but I’ve heard stories from other women that say otherwise.
If anything changes though…that would be my immediate next step.
