Leave Snooki Alone!

The Internet went a little crazy when it was announced that Snooki gave birth to her son, Lorenzo. There were lots and lots (and lots) of jokes, and many of them were funny. There were some though, like the ones above, that were pretty mean spirited. I’m not a fan of Jersey Shore or anything (I prefer the klassier Keeping Up With The Kardashians), but after seeing enough of these harsh tweets I felt the urge to channel my inner Chris Crocker and yell, “LEAVE SNOOKI ALONE!”
Look, I get it. Snooki is famous for stumbling around drunk, hooking up with random dudes, and getting into finger waving fights. But here’s the thing: In my younger days I knew a lot of girls who had their share of “Snooki moments,” and many of them are now great mothers. Heck, if I’m being honest, I had my share of “Snooki moments” too and consider myself a pretty great mother.
It seems to me that instead of mocking Snooki for having a baby we should see it for what it very well might be: a big step toward finally growing up. While I’ve certainly known women who were just as irresponsible and immature after having a baby as they were before, the majority of mothers I know were transformed by the experience. If you embrace being a Mom (or Dad), you learn to think less about yourself, to make sacrifices for others, and to put more consideration into how your present yourself because you are now a child’s role model. It’s a pretty amazing, life changing experience.
Snooki made the choice to become a mother, and more than likely is smart enough to realize that to be a good one she’s going to have to leave her wild days in the past. To me, that sounds like a woman who has made the decision to grow up, and her tweet after Lorenzo’s birth hinted at that, too.
“I am SO IN LOVE with my son Lorenzo Dominic! I had my little man last night, healthy at 6lbs! HE’S MY WORLD! ❤”
Snooki’s tweeting that her kid is her world makes me think she has at least some idea of how her life is going to change. Here’s an adult pro-tip though, Snooki: ditch the emoticons.
So from one mama to another, I’m sending you a little support, Snooki. If you ask me it’s not Snooki who deserves to be made fun of, but the other yahoos on that show who are still drinking, fighting, and acting like crazy teenagers long after it stopped being cute.
