In just over a week my boyfriend, Johnny Depp, turns fifty. I’ll take a moment and let that sink in. FIFTY!
Born John Christopher Depp II on the ninth of June in 1963 in a small town in Kentucky called Owensboro, Johnny says he was a quirky child. I can believe that. He is the youngest of four and his family moved around quite often. When he speaks about his childhood it is not fondly.
In speaking about his role of Gilbert in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape Johnny says, “That was a difficult experience for me. I still haven’t seen the film and don’t think I will. It reminded me a lot of my childhood, my problems with my mom and dad and having to deal with their divorce. I didn’t have a lot of fun on the set and I still can’t watch the film because it was the saddest time in my life.”
Depp dropped out of high school at the age of 16 to join garage band, The Kids, and, for a while, was living in a friend’s ’67 Chevy Impala.
When Johnny discovered acting it was after several rocky years of being thrust into adulthood too soon. He married* at twenty and his wife introduced him to her ex. Her ex just happened to be some up and coming actor named Nicolas Cage. Yeah, you’ve probably heard of him. Nicolas hooked Johnny up with an agent and the next thing you know Depp is in Nightmare on Elm Street.
Johnny has been working consistently ever since. The parts he selects have never been the norm or expected and he always seems surprised by his heartthrob idol status. (oh my, but isn’t he dreamy?!)
You can next see Depp, whose mother came from full-blooded Cherokee, as Tonto on the big screen this July when The Lone Ranger comes to town. Disney has just announced it will donate the revenue from all ticket sales for the movie’s premiere to the American Indian College Fund.
Happy Birthday Johnny!
