Hey, Single Moms. Rick Santorum Wants to Put a Ring on You!

Are you a single mom? If so, GOP Presidential candidate Rick Santorum says you’re the key to President Obama’s 2012 victory!  As he was channeling his inner Beyonce recently (who knew he was a fan?), the former Pennsylvania Senator and presidential hopeful told a politically conservative group:

“Look at the political base of the Democratic Party: it is single mothers who run a household. Why? Because it’s so tough economically that they look to the government for help and therefore they’re going to vote. So if you want to reduce the Democratic advantage, what you want to do is build two parent families, you eliminate that desire for government.”

Well, who knew it was that simple to fix the economy and grow the Republican voter base — just find husbands for all those single mothers!

Just as marketers believe they’ve got single moms figured out, at least one politician believes he’s solved the “problems” of the decline of the nuclear family and our country’s economic woes all with one simple plan that won’t cost Uncle Sam a dime!

But why stop with single mothers as the latest political trend to bring voters into the Republican fold?

Surely Santorum also has a theory about the Republican advantage to marrying off single dads.  And if politicians start viewing the unmarried population as a threat to their survival, a focus on winning as many single women without children into the Grand Old Party can’t be far behind.  Because if Santorum’s logic holds, women without husbands will tune in to the fact that government hand-outs are so good, and the job market is so bad, that it makes more sense to give up job hunting and just get pregnant so they can enjoy the good life on food stamps and other government assistance, and then — voila! – more Democrats!  And he certainly wouldn’t want that to happen.

So watch out, ladies.  Rick Santorum appears to be on a quest to get you married before November 2012.  The good news is that if you start looking now, I’m sure you can find the perfect wedding dress.
