Hottest Makeup and Hair Trends for Fall

Fall beauty trendsFall is here and not only the weather changes. Your makeup, hair and clothes do, too. What are the top beauty trends for fall? If we need to sum them up in three words it would be polished, feminine and sophisticated. Here’s what you need to know to update your hair and makeup for fall.

“Wine stained lips and bold crimson lips are the hot colors for fall 2012,” says makeup artist Elizabeth Ulloa, who works with Covergirl. Celebrity makeup artist Claudia Betancur also is using more red on her clients, who appear on Hispanic TV and magazines.

To give you a natural and fresh look, blush should enhance your cheekbones and not overpower your face. Bobbi Brown has a great pink neutral, Pink Rose ($25.00), which looks great on both fair and medium skin tones. Avoid shimmer for a more polished look.

When it comes to hair, the idea is to pull strands off the face to achieve a polished look. Texture and layers to give movement to straighter do’s are the way to go, according to celebrity hairstylist Carlos Vera, who has worked with Thalia, Britney Spears, Shakira and Kim Kardashian.  Avoid frizz if it’s rainy outside by using a spray that will lock out moisture; Vera uses Pantene Normal-Thick Hair Solutions Anti-Humidity Hairspray ($3.99).

He also says you won’t see as many requests for ombre colored hair; the most fashionable trend is to take chunks of hair and color them in a contrasting hue to give depth.

Here’s a roundup of the major beauty trends you will see during the cooler months.

Top Beauty Trends for Fall 2012

  • Dark and metallic nails 1 of 11
    Dark and metallic nails
The rich and deep tones you will see for lips are also available for nails. Deep purples and burgundies abound. You will also see dark greens that are surprisingly wearable. Essie has also come out with foil-inspired metallics that are very neutral and ideal for special occasions or a night out on the town. Some notable colors: Essie's No Place Like Chrome, Stylenomics, Skirting the Issue and Good as Gold; Chanel's Provocation, Vamp and Graphite; L'Oreal Paris Because I'm Worth It, Breaking Curfew and Violet Vixen. • Color blocking… For hair! 2 of 11
    Color blocking... For hair!
Celebrity hairstylist Carlos Vera from Vision of Vera says ombre color is on its way out while color blocking is all the rage, especially for brunettes. Basically it involves grabbing a big chunk of hair at the bottom and coloring it in a different shade to give the entire head a feeling of depth. Vera's favorite look involves using a reddish brown color to give depth to brunettes. This is not a trend for those who wear highlights. Feeling daring? Fashion-forward women are opting for burgundy chunks. Photo: Istock photo
  • When in doubt, choose red 3 of 11
    When in doubt, choose red
Red lips are still on trend, but it's a classic so that should not surprise you. Keep in mind that the more dramatic the lip, the lighter you should go on your eye makeup. "I suggest keeping your make-up to a minimum paired with beautiful fluffy lashes," says makeup artist Elizabeth Ulloa (she likes the intense volume that COVERGIRL LashBlast Volume Mascara offers). L'Oreal makeup artist Claudia Betancur agrees, and prefers to pair a bold lip with metallic eyeshadows, since they are surprisingly neutral. Some great affordable reds: COVERGIRL LipPerfection in Hot or Mary Kay lipstick in Red. If all you want is a hint of red, try Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in Two Ton Tomato.

  • Long wearing eyeliner 4 of 11
    Long wearing eyeliner
Gel eyeliners have gone mainstream. Bobbi Brown was one of the first to come out with this type of eyeliner that fast became a staple in makeup artists' bags (hers is $22) . Now most cosmetics brands have their own variation. L'Oreal Paris has an excellent version (Infallible® Gel Lacquer Liner 24HR, $9.95) that comes with its own brush. If you can splurge, the Yves Saint Laurent Effet Faux Cils Longwear Cream Eyeliner ($25) has beautiful colors. Another bonus is that these eyeliners lend themselves well to create the cat-eye look that is so on trend right now.
  • Deconstructed braids 5 of 11
    Deconstructed braids
This bohemian trend that was all the rage during the summer is still fashionable for fall, but with a twist. Try deconstructing your braid, make it looser and stay away from milkmaid-style braids. The idea is to look polished, not childish. You can also do two small braids on each side and gather at the back of your head, such as this style created by Carlos Vera, who recommends using a moisturizing creme such as Pantene Pro-V Daily Moisture Renewal Silky Moisture Whip ($6.99). • Flawless skin 6 of 11
    Flawless skin
Whether you have perfect skin or not, there are many ways to look as if you have a beautiful complexion. Many foundations serve double duty as skincare, such as Clinique's Pore Refining Solutions Instant Perfecting Makeup (minimizes pores, $27.00), COVERGIRL & Olay Tone Rehab 2-in-1 Foundation (evens out skin tone, $14.99) or L'Oreal Paris Visible Lift Repair (which lists vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and Pro-Retinol among its ingredients, $14.95), among many others. Foundation should not look heavy or cover everything. It should even out your skintone, but for major blemishes, scars or under-eye circles, always use concealer in those problem areas instead of loading up on foundation. The idea is for foundation to look as id it is not there so remember to pick a foundation color that matches your skin tone. If it is too dark it will look like a mask. If it is too light, it will look very artificial and even pasty at times.

  • Shimmering eye shadow 7 of 11
    Shimmering eye shadow
Shimmer and metallic seem to be huge in the beauty industry right now and this trend translates well into eyeshadows. Although anything sparkly is best left for night, you can also try one of the long-wearing shadows for day. Just make sure it is a soft and neutral shade. For example, L'Oreal Paris has a winner in the golden 24Hr Infallible eye shadow in Eternal Sunshine ($7.95), which looks great on most skin tones and complements all eye colors. If you just wear it with mascara it looks quite subtle. If you add eyeliner (preferably liquid or gel) and another coat of mascara, it looks great for night.

  • Nude tones for day 8 of 11
    Nude tones for day
The polished and feminine clothes you will see in stores look great during the day when worn with a neutral face, especially if you prefer a natural look. Lips take the lead with hushed nude tones. Try Bobbi Brown Rich Lip Color in Uber Beige, Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Dolce, Armani Shine Lipstick in 5 or L'Oreal Paris Colour Riche Lipcolour in Fairest Nude 800. If you are looking for a gloss that will look great on everybody, try Mary Kay's Cafe Au Lait Nutrishine Plus lip gloss.
  • Dramatic lashes 9 of 11
    Dramatic lashes
Although many have become experts at applying false eyelashes, for most of us it seems too complicated. That does not mean you can't have dramatic lashes. There are some pretty amazing mascaras that not only lengthen your lashes, but they also provide volume. Just keep in mind you should curl your lashes before you apply mascara. Brands that have great mascaras: Clinique, L'Oreal, Covergirl, Armani and Chanel.

  • Work with what you have 10 of 11
    Work with what you have
There are great styling aids for all kinds of hair. Some help a blow dry last longer, others protect your finished hair-do from wind and humidity. If you use any Argan oil product, apply when your hair is wet so it won't weigh it down.
  • Vibrant and defined lips 11 of 11
    Vibrant and defined lips
Deep and rich colors for lips are all over makeup counters. Watch out for burgundies, plums and wine tones. Dark lip colors also require you to exfoliate and moisturize your lips before applying the lipstick. Try COVERGIRL Outlast All-Day LipColor in Ruby Reflection, or if you prefer a sheerer look, try Sugar's tinted lip treatment in Plum, Berry or Passion (which is a deeper red).
