Running From One Place to Another Should Count As Exercise

By |

Guess which shoes really get a workout...

I’m not an athlete but I do run. The caveat is that I run not in a way that experts would say benefits my health.

Although I am ashamed to confess my everyday lack of exercise,  I do hope that in the big scheme of things, running from one place to another qualifies as a cardiovascular activity. Actually, it should count, mainly because I do feel my heart rate going up when I am racing from one part of town to another to be able to morph from my career woman role into the mommy one.

Of course, there´s more. Much more.  I also need to transform myself at the speed of light into a wife and friend and daughter and housekeeper… You get the idea.

Therefore, aside from running, I am juggling. Don’t I get extra credit for that?

I honestly believe the type of running most working mothers do should count as exercise.  Even if we don´t actually jog on the treadmill or run around the block. For example, while my sneakers collect dust in my closet, I constantly switch between heels and flip flops, pretty dresses and laid-back jeans, full makeup and barely washed face with sunglasses covering the unconcealed dark circles. I call that circuit training!

And I run. Not away (although sometimes the thought does tempt me). Just from home to carpool to meetings to after-school activities to the supermarket to events to birthdays to sports tournaments to television sets… To wherever I might need to be at any given time. Most of the time, to where I had to be 5 minutes ago because no matter how much I try to organize myself, chances are I won´t always make it on time. Not because I don´t want, simply because I just couldn’t.

I mean, it’s exhausting. All this activity often makes me break a sweat and gets my pulse racing, so for me it qualifies as a exercise. I guess. I hope. We all wish.

Right?
