Would You Take Your Newborn To A Soccer Game Like Shakira?

Shakira takes baby Milan to FC Barcelona game

Most first time parents wonder when they can fully venture with their newborn outside of their home. Some prefer to limits outings until the baby has their first shot; others, like pop star Shakira, are much more relaxed. So relaxed, in fact, that she already took her weeks old son Milan Piqué Mebarak to watch daddy Gerard Piqué play soccer for the FC Barcelona. Over 5,532 have retweeted the picture. Some are frowning, others are criticizing.

I remember when my son was born, we were extremely careful during his first weeks of life. We went for daily walks taking him in his stroller or in the baby carrier but we avoided malls and crowded places like the plague. We washed our hands frequently and we packed hand sanitizer in the diaper bag, my pocketbook, the car, in the stroller… We did leave the house but dined at restaurants that had terraces so we could sit outside.  You can laugh all you want, but we really were careful.

Why? We honestly did not want him to get sick. We knew that in the US, any infant under the age of 6 weeks with a fever gets a spinal tap and is admitted to the hospital for at least 36 hours. We would rather just limit exposure to any viruses when he was still adjusting to life outside of the womb. Our nephew had to be hospitalized when he was a newborn and we were willing to do anything to avoid that terrible angst.

With my daughter, born three years after her brother, we were also very picky about our outings but a little more relaxed. As soon as she got her first shots we actually took her to the most crowded place of all, Disneyworld, but it was a magical trip for our firstborn and totally worth it. After 2 months of bed rest and being careful those first weeks of life, we were ready for some fun as a family.

Although I’m not judging Shakira, because she clearly adores her baby and does what she thinks is best for him, I wonder whether it was a bit too soon to take her son to “watch” Daddy score at a soccer game.  He was born January 22nd, after all, and probably slept through the whole event. Was it really necessary to expose him to all kinds of viruses, especially during the winter? What do you think? Should everybody just leave Shakira alone and let her be?

Totally agree with you, her baby is a new born, to small to expose to viruses, cold and noise, and still has plenty of time to watch Daddy´s game.

I wouldn’t take my newborn to a crowded place, actually I barely took my kids out of the house for the first two months. For me better safe than sorry, specially on the Winter months.

  4. Kris says:

She wasn’t out in the stands. THAT would have been stupid. Since her partner is one of the players you can bet she has her own VIP box and wasn’t walking him through a throng of people.
