Along with parenthood come one-too-many sleepless nights. Aside from the usual consequences (exhaustion, inability to concentrate, sluggishness), not sleeping enough can wreak havoc on your appearance. For some mysterious reason, this happens to moms in particular. Most men seem to be immune or somehow manage to look fine even with a newborn at home.
In case too many people look at you with a bit of pity in their eyes and sneak in a “You look tired,” comment, I have a few tips. No, I don’t have a cure for under-eye dark circles or a recipe to get your little one to sleep through the night, but you can improve the appearance of those shadows that make you look tired.
Here’s how to fake a good night’s sleep, even if your baby kept you awake all night long. Like mine used to do.
Aside from applying concealer (but not tons), there are a few makeup tricks:
- If you want to wear eyeshadow, avoid shimmery or dark hues. It’s much better and fresher to use a matte, light neutral shade like an eggshell or light peach tone. Shimmer just calls attention to the area.
- Curl your lashes to instantly “open” your eyes and apply one coat of mascara. Dark navy blue mascara will also help counteract irritated and bloodshot eyes.
- To show a healthy flush instead of an exhausted pallor, apply a matte bronzer with a big brush. Then smile and apply a pink or peachy rose blush to the apples of your cheeks. It really brightens up your entire face.

If only feeling awake was as easy to fake… I guess that’s why caffeine exists.
