Kids and cellphones seem to go together like peanut butter and jelly these days, but even if more children are getting mobile phones at a younger age, parents still don’t know how to ensure safety and proper usage. The biggest issues come with smartphones, since they open the door to so many things: social media, open access to the internet, videos and tons of apps.
My oldest son has an iPhone and it’s been both a blessing and a curse. Kids use smartphones to play apps or as entertainment devices, so they could spend hours glued to their phones, even if they aren’t chatting with their friends. That’s why setting up limits from the beginning is really crucial. You also need to monitor how your child or tween is using the mobile device. In my own family, we decided to allow my tween to use Instagram, but only if certain rules are followed.
