Kate Winslet Shamed By Internet For Having 3 Babies By 3 Husbands

Kate WinsletOn Tuesday (7/4) Academy Award winning actress Kate Winslet announced that she is expecting a third child, with new husband Ned Rocknroll. And though many of us may fight to contain our eyerolling at the idea of “Baby Rocknroll,” the story is but one in a slew of unremarkable celebrity baby announcements that seem to stream forth incessantly from the bowels (uteri?) of Hollywood, and so what, right?

WRONG.

The internet begs to differ. Why? Because this new baby is Winslet’s third child from three different men. Let the pearl-clutching commence! A sampling of online commentary:

Even by the easy-come, easy-go standards of modern show business, to have chalked up three marriages and three children by three different men, all before you hit 40, is going some…

Kate’s announcement provoked online abuse from middle-class mothers, who cruelly labelled her a 3×3…

‘3rd child by 3rd husband. Yes absolutely appalling’…

…Miss Winslet’s romantic history is so drama-soaked that one starts to wonder why she finds her happy-ever-afters so transient…

Three children with three different men is not called hopelessly romantic, it is called a HOT MESS…

Three kids, three different men…Ms. Winslet may want to slow down and close up shop down there for a while…

You get the idea.

I’ve spent a good amount of time this morning trying to break down precisely where these attitudes are coming from, with little success. Is this classic “slut-shaming,” or is it something else? Is it the married-three-times-before-age-40 bit that is setting people off, or the fact that she’s elected to have a child by each of these men? Is it her perceived inconstancy – her inability to stay in a single marriage – or her active procreation with each of the men she married during the marriage? HELP ME UNDERSTAND THE OFFENSE HERE, INTERNET.

For my part, this is shoulder-shrug worthy at best. What grown-ups do is their own business, and no one can truly know what happened in Winslet’s marriages that caused them to fail, or where the ‘blame’ for their failures should be placed. That she had a child in each relationship suggests a degree of commitment to the union on her part at the time – most people don’t go getting knocked up if they’re just messing around, or planning their exit. And really, in 2013, is having multiple marriages with children so shocking? Or is it just shocking because it’s a woman doing it, not a man?

What do you think? Is Winslet’s behavior unseemly and worthy of condemnation, or is this much ado about nothing?
