Yesterday while talking to Ceceliz Guerrero, I felt goosebumps all over when she told me her big surprise. In today’s issue of People Magazine, Ceceliz’ daughter, Valentina, a baby with Down syndrome, is sharing the cover with celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, and the stars of Twilight.
I asked her if she ever thought something like this could happen one day?
She laughed with excitement on the other end of the phone. “I’m just so happy and proud of her. Everything is happening so fast, that we are still trying to digest all that is happening. It’s like a dream.”
Ceceliz and her husband, Juan Fernando Guerrero, are no different than any other parents. They want the best for their child, and as any family who is blessed with a “born to be a star” child, they are enjoying every step that little Valentina is taking in her fast-growing career as a model.
Yes, you read it right! Valentina has a serious career as a model. Spanish swimwear designer Dolores Cortés saw the beauty and uniqueness in her eyes when she invited her to be the cover model for her 2013 children’s collection, DC Kids. She didn’t choose Valentina because she has Down syndrome; she chose her because she is Valentina, a beautiful baby who is showing everyone that the sky is the limit, no matter how many chromosomes you have.
A lot of celebrities land on the cover of People Magazine because of their romances, scandals or tragedies. Valentina is there today for her own merits – her beauty and her contagious innocence behind a pair of almond eyes.
The ironic part of this story is that her steps into the world of fashion and modeling are so big, but she doesn’t even walk yet! Isn’t that amazing?
People – Baby with Down syndrome lands mayor fashion campaign ”Discovered by Hillman, a scout for Spanish fashion designer Dolores Cortés, Valentina — featured in PEOPLE this week — is considered the first child model with Down syndrome to land a campaign with a noteworthy fashion designer”
Every time I see things like this happen, I can only feel proud of parents like Ceceliz and Juan Fernando, who are not scared to seize opportunities and make the best of them.
Many parents of children with special needs feel that their children will be exploited or exposed if they are models, or that they’ll be chosen just because they have Down syndrome. I understand their fears, but feeling this way just limits their children’s natural abilities to be whatever and whomever they want to be.
Some people are born to change the world and to set new standards for beauty and perfection, and Valentina Guerrero is one of them. We will be following her career, and cheering this brave little warrior all the way.
