Cold winter nights scream for hearty, satisfying meals, don’t they? Well, if you haven’t met before, let me introduce you to my best friend — the slow cooker.

I am obsessed with my slow cooker (or crock pot, as some like to call it), and I have an arsenal of delicious dinners in my repertoire. Lately, I’ve been using my Surface tablet in the kitchen while preparing our hearty meals, and it’s made dinner preparation a breeze.

Here’s one of my very favorite cold weather dishes, Creamy Potato Soup:

6 slices bacon; cut into ½ inch pieces
1 tbsp. butter
1 onion, finely chopped
32 oz. chicken broth
1 cup water
6 large potatoes, diced
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. dried dill weed
1 clove of garlic
1 tsp. pepper
1 cup all purpose flour
2 cups heavy cream
shredded cheese and green onions for garnish

1. Sauté onion in butter over medium-high heat until soft.
2. Place onion in slow cooker, and stir in chicken broth, water, potatoes, salt, dill weed, garlic, and pepper. Cover and cook on low 6 to 7 hours.
3. 30 minutes before serving, combine flour and heavy cream. Stir into soup.
4. Cook the bacon separately, drain on paper towel, then add as topping along with cheese and green onion.

  • The best mode ever! 5 of 6

So ... you're making a particularly messy meal and you don't necessarily want to touch your screen. The Bing Food and Drink app has a hands-free mode which utilizes the built-in camera to "see" your hand movement. When you want to "turn" the page, just wave your hand in front of the camera, and it will proceed to the next page. How cool!

  • Any takers? 6 of 6

Warm, satisfying, and a breeze to make! You're family will love it and you won't believe how easy it is to make!
