As a kid, our family road trips were always the same. My brothers, sister, and I would pile in the car in the sweltering hot sun and my parents would drive south from Tucson past the Mexican border to San Carlos or Guaymas in Sonora, Mexico.
Road trips for my two boys are much different. We pile in a car and drive and drive, but we end up at a campsite or a rustic hotel and instead of relaxing by the water we hike, climb, sled, and camp. 2012 was the year of the road trip for our family. We played in the snow in Yosemite, scaled rocks in Joshua Tree, and hiked in Zion National Park to name a few spots. My boys have seen more terrain in their 7 and 8 years than I did in my first 30.
Here are the highlights from our 2012 travels. I wonder if when my boys are older our weekend road trips will blend together like my summers at the beach and seem like one long trip in the car.
