Mother's Day Gifts Should Be All About Mom

Mother’s Day is tomorrow May 12th which means that my television, radio and email box have been overflowing with adds and messages all claiming to know what I and all the other mothers around the world really want on our “special” day. I’m 15 years into my motherhood tenure so I feel suitably justified in telling you that they are all wrong. Their wrong! None of these ad people have it right at all. They are just dangling shiny objects in front of gullible men and children who are desperate for some direction in the absence of Mom’s supervision and guidance. Because Mother’s Day is the one day they are supposed to do it by themselves. In their panic they can be convinced to buy anything. It’s time to break the cycle and inject some truth into this situation. I’m not going to tell you what to get, because it should be a gift that speaks directly to the Mother in your life, but I will layout some simple rules to keep you out of the danger zone. Rule of thumb, do not buy gifts that fall under these categories:

  • Mother’s Day Gift Do’s and Don’ts 1 of 8
    Mother's Day Gift Do's and Don'ts
A true Mother's Day gift is all about Mom.
  • No Cleaning For Mom 2 of 8
    No Cleaning For Mom
Do not give your Mom a gift that she herself will have to clean up after.
  • Mom Shouldn’t Have To Ask 3 of 8
    Mom Shouldn't Have To Ask
Do not give Mom a gift that she herself ordered or gave you a detailed description of what to buy where to buy it, and the money to pay for it.
  • Gifts Should Fit 4 of 8
    Gifts Should Fit
Do not give Mom a gift of an article of clothing that is a color she never wears, isn't flattering or obviously won't fit.
  • A Mother’s Day Meal Should Satisfy The Mother 5 of 8
A Mother's Day Meal Should Satisfy The Mother
Do not give your Mom any meal that goes against her personal eating plan.
  • Do It For Your Mother 6 of 8
    Do It For Your Mother
If you go somewhere for your mother, don't punish her for it.
  • Do Not Mess With Mom’s Wish Fund 7 of 8
Do Not Mess With Mom's Wish Fund
Do not give Mom a gift that uses up reserve money in the family budget that she is saving for something special.
  • Happy Mother’s Day! 8 of 8
    Happy Mother's Day!
All a mother wants really, is the love of her kids.

You know your mother better than you think. Just take the time to think about who they are and what makes them happy, as opposed to what you want them to have, or worse yet, what’s on sale. Keep your mind on the Mother herself and you won’t go wrong. Mother’s Day gifts should be all about Mom. But lucky for you, we tend to be very forgiving as long as you put in some effort.
