My Boys- Fashion Icons

When our oldest son was a toddler we lived outside of Memphis, TN. Everywhere we looked we saw little boys dressed in smocked rompers. My husband, not originally from the South, and not generally a fan of gigantic boys in frills, quickly noticed the romper trend. He asked me to please never put our boys in frilly smocked rompers after they could walk…or run..or climb trees…

You may be wondering what a smocked romper is exactly.  I’ll show you, but in good conscience I did protect the identities of the children in the picture. The two boy rompers in the photo below are quite manly compared to what the kids in Memphis used to wear.

Boys in delicate rompers always made me giggle as I watched the boys fight in sandboxes, find tree branches to use as swords or simply take a break to eat boogers on the playground.

My boys have always had leeway in their attire. They all attend school that requires uniforms, so they are presentable most of the time. At home, I’m lucky if they all wear pants.

I take great delight in their crazy outfits and recently I sent my friend, Cassie, a picture and she said, “You could do a whole set of your boys, the fashion plates,” and this post was born.

We’ve all heard the advice about picking our battles in life. I battle the bad habits of disrespect, laziness and selfishness with the kids just like all parents do. (To be quite honest, I still battle those things with myself, too.) But, I let the little things go with the kids. I buy the clothes and they have free reign to combine them how they wish when we are at home.

At our house I can be heard yelling at them to be nice to each other but never to put on matching socks.

I looked through my iPhone pictures from last year and found some of my favorite examples of my boys, the fashion icons. Enjoy!

Big love to the ladies who added ideas, humor & photos for this post. Cassie, Ann & Jana.

What about you? Do you live with fashion icons, too? I would love to hear!
