On Cats, Dogs and Equality

Dogs, Cats and EqualityCody and I have been on the search for a rescue dog over the past several months, time after time applications were denied for one reason or another.  “We have a lot of love to give! We want to give a dog a home and a family! Why are you making it so hard on us!?”

In all honesty I am a cat person, while there are some people who believe there are no ugly babies, I can readily admit there are some goofy looking babies in the world (I was one of them) yet, to me, every cat is the most glorious and wonderful creature ever created. My husband prefers hound dogs with good training and he’s taken a strong liking to all the cats I’ve brought into his life. I talked with a lot of people this past weekend about cats vs. dogs and it became really obvious who was on team cat when they heard about my feline obsession and canine indifference.

No one thought any less of me when I admitted to strongly preferring cats over dogs, nor do I fault anyone for disliking cats and surrounding themselves with dogs.

Preferring cats or dogs isn’t switch that can be turned on and off. Most people have a strong preference for one or the other and what’s wonderful is we can all choose who or what we bring into our lives. I’m not a dog person, I’ve always appreciated them and what they mean to the people who love them, but I don’t ever see myself surrounded by dogs the way I fantasize about being surrounded by cats.

I just want everyone to have the chance to have the family that fits them best, whether that involves cats, dogs, babies, ferrets, birds, a boyfriend, a girlfriend, a wife, a husband or one of each. We should all be able to love who we want to love and be with who means the most to us.

There are a lot of families and friendships being ripped apart right now because of differing views over what is supposedly “right.”

Love is right.

Whether that love is between a man and a woman, two women, two men, a man and seven cats or a woman and twelve dogs, we all deserve the right to be happy and in love with whom we are most drawn to.

I don’t want to offend anyone by comparing marriage to a human/animal companionship, but I couldn’t force myself to love dogs no matter how much “training” or “therapy” I went through. I don’t understand why anyone wouldn’t be in heaven with a furry purry ball of cat lying near them yet I know people who are disgusted by the thought, more cats for me! I don’t think of that person as any less simply because they don’t understand my feline fascination. I am a cat person. Period. It is not a choice that I prefer cats over dogs, it’s just who I am. My mom? She loves dogs, all dogs all the time. My sister loves every animal and her home is filled with them. Loving our pets makes us better people, and if anyone tried to tell me, my family or friends that our preference of companion was wrong? I’d be furious.

Purring cats are happiness

I am not anti-anything, I am simply pro-love, wherever someone happens to find it.

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.” -Lao Tzu
