On The Hunt For: Smudge Proof Eyeliner

3166ftlJzdL._SY450_

It’s coming on summer, which means it’s time to drastically simplify our make up routines and embrace the freckly, suntanned, just-woke-up-looking-fabulous natural look. I’m so ready!

The one bit of make up I can never part with in the summer time is eyeliner. Here is my reasoning: you can’t really wear false lashes in the summer (heat and humidity aren’t a glue’s best friend), you don’t really want to wear a ton of foundation or blush (it’ll melt off), and statement lipstick doesn’t go so well with ice cream cones. Ya dig?

For the summer I like a good swipe of cat eye eyeliner, some waterproof mascara, and the natural flush of a good, hot day. Okay, maybe some tinted moisturizer. (With built in SPF, sure!)

The trick to pulling this off lies in finding a summer-appropriate eye liner. One that won’t drip down your face when the sun is at its business, and one that won’t require any touch ups for those days when you’re running from afternoon playgrounds to evening back yard BBQs. And luckily for us all, I’ve spent the last week testing a slew of my drugstore’s finest 24-hour, waterproof, smudge-proof eyeliner specimens. Of course not all do what they claim to do . . . and some come out of left field and surprise us all.

Are you ready? The summer sun is waiting!

  • Maybelline Lasting Drama by Eyestudio Gel Eyeliner in Charcoal 1 of 4
Maybelline Lasting Drama by Eyestudio Gel Eyeliner in Charcoal
The Maybelline definitely wins points for maneuverability. It's a brush/gel combo and the brush is really well made, with the bristles at just the right angle for maximum control. Make it as thick or thin as you want, it's a lovely applicator. That's where the good stuff ends, sadly. The formula is too sparkly, and this sucker smudges. Hard. Disappointing, for sure. Three out of five stars.

  • L’Oréal Infallible Liquid Eyeliner in Black 2 of 4
L'Oréal Infallible Liquid Eyeliner in Black
This one has the distinction of being a marker style loader, only with a traditional liquid style brush. It's not a felt tip, in other words. Application was tricky but not difficult, I just felt like I needed to take a deep breath and use all my elbows for stability first ;). Its staying power is pretty good, and smudging stayed at a minimum. It DID smudge, just not as badly as the others. Four out of five stars, maybe?

  • Wet n Wild H20 Proof Liquid Eyeliner in Ultra Black 3 of 4
Wet n Wild H20 Proof Liquid Eyeliner in Ultra Black
I bow down to thee, O Great Wet n Wild! How is it that every time you think something's gonna be junky it ends up sweeping the competition without breaking a sweat? This one wins. Oh, it wins! It's a felt tip, giving you maximum control, but it's a dipper, which is so great because unlike with the marker style loader, you don't have to worry about running out of liquid prematurely. And then you have to shake it to get more make up into the applicator tip? . . . You know what I mean. In a smudge test this bad boy did not move an inch. This is both good news and bad news. Once this guy is on there, there is no going back. Use extreme caution when applying. Five out of five.

  • Revlon Colorstay Créme Gel Eye Liner in Black 4 of 4
Revlon Colorstay Créme Gel Eye Liner in Black
The Revlon wins the award for stupidest applicator gimmick. So, get this. You pull off the top of the lid, then turn it upside down, and snap it into the rest of the lid. And then you dunk the thing into the gel pot underneat. Except the thing is, there is nothing keeping the top of the lid (where the applicator lives) stuck into the bottom of lid (where the screwer lives). So what ends up happening is, either your applicator wand keeps breaking in half or you just use the applicator alone, which is the equivalent of a golf pencil for an applicator. Come on now, Revlon. Also, this formula isn't so great. Like most gel liners, it's a smudger, and it's quick to lose it's depth of color, too. Thumbs down, Revlon. One out of four!
