Origins of The Little Mermaid: How the Classic Came to Be (Video)

Back in July I had the outrageously amazing opportunity to meet, listen to and talk with the writers and directors of The Little Mermaid (yes, THAT Little Mermaid!) as well as the voice of Ariel, Jodi Benson. John Musker and Ron Clements are also the masterminds behind Aladdin, Princess and the Frog as well as a super secret upcoming project that they mention in the video. Chances are if you’re living and breathing you have seen Disney’s The Little Mermaid, but what you probably don’t know is that the movie almost didn’t get made.

How did the directors find Jodi who is one of the most legendary Disney voices ever? How did two guys come up with the story of The Little Mermaid and what was the whole process like before YouTube, digital recorders and smartphones? This interview will give you some amazing (and exclusive) back story into how The Little Mermaid came to be.

Can’t see the video? Click here.

After the interview someone asked Jodi to sing AND SHE DID. You can find that video here, on my blog.

The Little Mermaid Diamond Edition Blu-Ray will be released October 1, 2013. Pre-order from The Disney Store and receive a free limited edition lithograph set!

Find more of Casey’s writing on her blog moosh in indy or her Babble Voices site Shutterlovely. She’s also available on twitter, facebook, flickr and Instagram. If you can’t find her any of those places? Check the couch, she’s probably taking a nap.
