Our Favorite Outdoor Games

summer backyard gamesSummer is a time for playing and dreaming, breathing a bit more deeply and basking in a few warm sun rays. But all too often it seems to be over before it began, yes? This year, we’ve dedicated a weekly ritual centered around family, fun and food: outdoor game night! Check out a few of our favorites below, including a smashing soiree we threw last weekend!:

1. Croquet
Of course croquet is going to top my list, especially after our impromptu backyard party from last weekend! Fun for all ages, croquet is exciting whether you play by the rules or not. What kid doesn’t love to swing a mallet every now and then? Croquet set ($69.99)

2. Bean Bag Toss
OK, it’s called cornhole in these parts, and it’s irresistibly addictive. Here’s the thing about bean bag tosses: you don’t have to be the slightest bit athletic to be great at this game. (A clear reason why it ranks high on my list if you know me personally.) Bean Bag Toss set ($68.99)

3. Bocce Ball
I just learned how to play bocce ball last year and am still a bit fuzzy on the rules, but I do know this: we have never attempted a game of bocce ball without laughing hysterically. And isn’t that the entire point of outdoor game night? To make fun of each other memories? Bocce Ball Game set ($28.09)

4. Badminton
I have happy memories of playing badminton at my aunt’s house in the summertime, so this one’s a must for our family. Bonus? The net doubles as an impromptu volleyball court (which is much more entertaining if you turn the sprinkler system on, FYI). Badminton set ($69.99)

5. Ladder Ball
Another favorite with the kids, dominating this game seems to be all luck and little skill (or at least that’s what I tell myself when I lose to a 2-year-old?). Ladder Ball set ($69.99)

The best news of all? Serve your favorite refreshments, invite some neighbors and you’ve just hosted the party of the season for under $100. Happy outdoor gaming!
