Party Pictures For Amateurs

All right! Christmas is almost upon us. Are you excited? I am so hopped up with excitement that I’m having trouble coming up with synonyms for excitement. Although I’m not sure why we need any really. Can’t we just say excited a bunch of times and feel confident that people understand that we’re not dumb, we’re just too lazy to think of words that are synonymous with excitement? One of the reasons that I’m extra happy about Christmas is that it signifies the end of the birthday season as well. Both Elby and my twins Sadie and Matilda had a birthday in November. It gets really crazy and honestly by the end of December the whole thing has just become a blur. And that’s why I’m happy that we take tons of pictures of all the festivities.

But don’t you hate it when you take pictures of an event and then realize that you neglected to get some key shots? It happens to the best of us, and by “best of us” I mean me. Luckily my husband is often the shooter which allows me to bark orders at him of what to get. And I’m going to share it with you in the form of tips. You don’t even have to thank me. You can simply donate to me through my PayPal donate button. I’m KIDDING. But didn’t you get mad for a second?

It's important to have a picture of the cake because when you look back on the party it's a great indicator of what your kid was into at the time...or what the grocery store had available.

Strawberry Shortcake because they didn't have the Barbie Popstar she reeeeeally wanted.

Okay, minus the birthday girls but it's always good to have a pic of the rest of us.

    Blowing Out the Candles
Blowing out the candles is pretty iconic as far as birthday parties go, am I right? So you'll need that one.

Mark the moment. I find that not looking straight into the camera helps your subjects look more natural and less posey. But maybe you like posey. I don't know. I'm not you.

Anytime you're somewhere as fabulous as Chuck E. Cheese, you're not going to want to miss the ticket booth extravaganza. Or if you go to an amusement park, get a roller coaster shot, you just need to capture people in the middle of the excitement.
  • The Aftermath 7 of 7
    The Aftermath
Every good birthday should end with your child almost comatose drunk on sugar and wearing a vest. Okay, well mine likes to be wearing a vest. Yours may not feel that the best party ends in a vest but mind does so take it up with her.
