The Fourth isn’t just about fireworks. I love to celebrate our nation’s independence with…wait for it…FLOWERS! Why not? They’re the celebration that keeps on growing.

Here’s a glimpse into my my most recent foray into patriotic gardening:

Turned out pretty,  no? Here are my top tips for how to arrange flowers in a container. It’s an art, people!

1. Tall and spiky in the center. See those pretty red flowers? That’s salvia, and it’s the anchor of this container. They make a statement and capture the eye.

2. Pick a fluffy, full flower for the bulk of the container. My pretty white petunias do that job wonderfully. They fill in the majority of the space without being overwhelming. Love you, petunias!

3. Nestle in some ground-covery type flowers around the edges. I used these pretty little blue flowers for my patriotic container…they will cover any visible dirt on the periphery and dangle over the edges a bit as well. Another option for this third flower is to use a flowering vine; they hang dramatically over the rim and really make a statement.

How do you celebrate the Fourth? I’d love to hear; share your stories in the comments!
