Every Mother Counts Releases “The Walk”, Runs ING New York City Marathon for Maternal Health

By Jennifer James |

Every Mother Counts, a maternal health advocacy and mobilization campaign founded by maternal health advocate and fashion icon Christy Turlington Burns, released a new social film, The Walk, this week to raise awareness about the plight women face in developing countries while pregnant. Currently over 800 women die each day due to pregnancy and childbirth complications. 99% of all maternal deaths occur in developing countries according to the World Health Organization. And, yet, nearly 90% of those deaths are preventable according to Every Mothers Counts.

The Walk, poignantly and directly relays the stark difference in being pregnant and delivering a baby in income-poor countries as opposed to income-rich countries. The Walk emphasizes the countless hours some women must walk to deliver their babies in a health facility with skilled health workers.

In honor of all of the women who must traverse miles just to deliver their baby, a 50-member Every Mother Counts team will lace up and run the ING New York City marathon on Sunday to raise awareness about maternal health and mortality. You can follow along at the hashtag #RunEMC and donate to the team at www.crowdrise.com/teamemc2012.
