Phenomenal Women- The ‘I Am’ Project

When I asked my friends last week to send a picture to me and finish this sentence “I am ____” I had no idea what would happen. I hoped that I would receive pictures of women telling me everything from recent successes to snapshots of daily life. Would fear of looking silly or haughty keep some people from participating? I hoped not.

I wanted to share the faces, the stories and the beauty of the community of moms that I love.
The pictures came pouring in. So many pictures that I needed to make three galleries!

These are Phenomenal Women.

“…It’s in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me…”

Phenomenal Woman

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms,
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them,
They say they still can’t see.
I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing,
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
The palm of my hand,
The need for my care.
‘Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Some of my Babble Voices colleagues joined in the “I am” project. You must go visit!

Megan at Threadbare Theory is, as always, OVER IT. She eloquently said what needs to be said to the universe. I adore her even though she didn’t link the word ‘Alli’ here.*

Tracey at Sweetney & Spice is full of joy, love of life and gauntlet throwing. When you think about it, we should all strive to be full of those three things, right?

Shawn at Parenting off the Map is brilliantly  witty He won me over with his foreshadowing ear. You’ll see…

Jennifer at Southern by Proxy is nothing but full of awesome. It’s official, she wins the Internet because of the salon photo.

Tanis at Hogwash from a Hoser has sifted through the rubble and come out strong, funny and beautiful. I love that she owned her successes, “..I am a strong woman. A good mother. A fantastic pie maker.” That makes me happy.

Catherine at Bad Mother Confidential is not afraid of looking like a dork. Our friendship was founded on a shared love of dorkiness, a thirst for adventure and debates about the Frankfurt School. We are an interesting duo.:)

* So why do I want the word “Alli’ linked to me always? If you Google ‘Alli’ you see a diet pill. This is unacceptable. WHY OF ALL THE NAMES IN THE WORLD THEY RUIN MINE? I’m determined to beat a diet pill for Google search results for my name. Yes, these are the things I spend my time on. Don’t judge me, Friends.

Thank you to all the phenomenal women who shared their faces and stories for this project. I am grateful.

Now it is your turn. Want to join in on this project? The next challenge is “I am grateful for____________”.
