I’ve already declared my love for the Monsters University movie so I won’t go on and on about it (again) but I did throw a Monsters University themed party for my daughter and some of her friends and it was so adorable I wanted to share.
Ready for the backstory? Great! Here goes…I was pretty big on throwing parties back when my oldest daughter was young and I’ll admit I really called on my inner Martha Stewart for those (albeit a little less perfect and a little more artsy, I will admit) but my younger daughter always wanted her parties at Chuck E Cheese or Pump it Up so I slowly let go of the DIY party obsession and embraced the easy (and the cheesy). Truthfully, I was grateful not to have the work and the high expectations of party planning off my plate, so to speak.
Now days, depending on the event and my energy level, I mix it up. Sometimes we do home parties and sometimes we do them elsewhere. The object for me is to not get stressed out about a happy occasion. I’ve gotten pretty good at it over the years, which is a really good thing for everyone involved.
As for the Monsters University themed party, I decided to stay true to fun and simple. Since one of my favorite things about the movie was the use of color, I used color as my party-planning inspiration. Because my daughter is a tween, I wanted to go easy on the character themed partyware and instead give it a more sophisticated feel, still in keeping with all the overall theme including the other things we loved about the movie; especially the characters! Knowing that Target carried all the Monsters U branded items I would need (and then some) as well as all the colorful elements I was looking for, I was able to get my shopping done in one trip, with one stop. Easy, thanks to Target.com/Disney. Here are some coupons too.
As for the fun? Here’s how I pulled it all together and how it all went down:
Have you heard about any of the other MU parties that have been happening? I can’t tell you how impressed I am with the creativity these gals have got going on. You have got to check out some of this stuff! Like the Mike Wazowski’s Eye DIY and the Tin Can Monster Feet DIY project from Alison Faulkner. Beyond adorable. And I love Casey Mullin’s photo booth idea too (the photographer that I am). I’m also in love with this DIY pennant. And if you consider yourself more of an “uncrafty” party planner, then take a peek at Megan Jordan’s ideas for a Monsters University sleepover. And if you’ve got older kids, like my daughters, or you happen to be smitten with the MU characters like I am , you do not want to miss this super-clever and simple Monster Manicure, courtesy of my teen who paints her nails for every occasion. I love that kid! So fun and clever.
Now, I want to hear from you. My guess is that you’ve got your own brilliant ideas up your sleeves for what to do for a Monsters U party.
